It was September of 2005. Moving trucks arrived at our postage-stamp sized, core area Winnipeg home. We watched everything we owned get loaded up into… I won’t tell you how many vehicles, and leave for the country.
And the adventure began. Northern lights swirled with heart wrenching beauty over us as we arrived at what would eventually become East Farthing Gardens. We had a lot to learn, coming from core Winnipeg to the open spaces of the prairies! We were entertaining to the locals to say the least.
The first number of years we continued to work in the city as we began reclaiming space; planting cherry orchards, creating secret gardens, paths, camping spots, and a haven for the weary.
FarmFest, a local Folk music festival and fall supper, was held in front of the stage built specially for it on our property for 5 years. The Outhouse of Wonder has remained a prime attraction for all who visit us at East Farthing Gardens. Weddings, socials, photoshoots, and numerous other gatherings have been the norm.
Growing came naturally. A hunger for beauty almost consuming. Feeding both body and soul, a passion. But how do you create a viable, sustainable food and beauty farm on 17 acres in a prairie filled with multi-section grain farms?
We have provided beets to several event facilities, restaurants and food producers, sold beets and fresh herbs at Farmers’ Markets, and moved into a CSA (community Supported Agriculture) model of delivering fresh vegetables and herbs to the city of Winnipeg.
With the need for local, sustainable, reliable food sources becoming a critical issue, and several years of being deluged with rain and losing our entire season, or drought, we have moved into growing hydroponic greens, herbs and edible flowers in a repurposed, pre-existing farm building, with plans to scale up as we grow. We love this land. We love sharing both food and beauty with you. Join us as we embark on this new adventure.
